EIN vs ITIN vs SSN: What's the Difference?

Vincent Duong July 16, 2026

These three acronyms get confused constantly, especially by founders new to the US business system.

EIN — Employer Identification Number

An EIN identifies your business, not you personally. Every US LLC needs one to open a bank account, file taxes, and hire employees.

ITIN — Individual Taxpayer Identification Number

An ITIN is issued to individuals who need to file US taxes but aren't eligible for an SSN — useful, but not required to get an EIN.

SSN — Social Security Number

Reserved for US citizens and certain residents. You do not need one to form an LLC or obtain an EIN.
